How to Help Your Child With Dance Class Frustrations
Dance classes are fun and exciting activities for children. They allow kids to express themselves, give them a fun way to release some energy, and provide them with their own little community. However, dance classes can be frustrating at times. Some moves are hard to nail down, there is a lot of practice and dedication that is required. Your child will likely get frustrated with their dance class from time to time, and that is completely normal, but there are ways that you can help them overcome this frustration and stick with their favorite dance classes!
At K2 Dance Studios in Corona, we know that dance classes can cause some frustration in children, no matter how old or the level of class they are in. We work hard to keep classes positive and encourage our dance students to keep working at it and having fun. However, your child will likely get discouraged and annoyed from time to time. We wanted to give parents some tips on how to help your child overcome their frustration with dance class and continue to practice this fun activity! Read on to learn more and be sure to check out the dance classes we offer to find one that your child will love.
Let Them Take a Break
Sometimes all we need when we are frustrated with the activity we are doing is to take a break. Stepping away from the activity and focusing on something else or just relaxing can help calm frustrations and allow us to jump back in with a positive mind. When you notice your child getting frustrated with their dance classes or practicing at home, encourage them to take a break.
If they are trying to nail a move at home and are getting discouraged, offer to go for a walk with them, play a game with them, or have them watch an episode of their favorite show. This will help get their mind off of whatever is frustrating them and relax for a second. Once they are calm and de-stressed, they can jump back into their dance practice and give it another shot. You will likely notice a positive change in their attitude and practice after you give them time to breathe and calm down.
Talk to Them
Be sure to talk to your child to find out why they are frustrated. Talking about their frustrations can help them get it out of their system and allow them to express how they are feeling. Let them know that how they are feeling is very normal and everyone in their class has similar frustrations. Talking it out with them is a great way to gauge how they feel, validate those feelings, and help them overcome them.
Be sure to remind your kid that dance class is meant to be fun. While it is a lot of work and takes practice and dedication, dance class is meant to be a fun thing for your child. Just like any sport or extracurricular activity, dance is meant to provide your kiddo with something fun that connects them to others, gives them something to look forward to, and ultimately, makes them happy. By reminding your child that this is supposed to be something fun for them to do, you can hopefully help them view their practice as less frustrating and a great time to try new things and express themselves in different ways.
Work On Finding A Solution
There may be times during your child’s time in a dance class where they feel so frustrated and discouraged that it isn’t fun for them anymore. While we hate to see this, it does happen. Instead of just letting your child quit or watching your child be frustrated every time they are practicing, try to find a solution for them. Talk to them about why they are frustrated and help them come up with a solution to help them find joy in their dance classes once again.
Maybe they want to try a different type of dance class. Maybe practicing for a shorter amount of time but more often throughout the week can help them get the practice they need without getting frustrated. Work with your child and test out different solutions to see what helps them. They may just need you to help them find something that works for them to get over their frustrations and start enjoying dance again.
Start Noting Their Improvements
It can be hard for your child to notice their own improvements, especially when they continue to get frustrated with areas they are having trouble with. Be sure to mention when you notice improvements they have made during their time in dance class. When they realize that you notice that their practice has paid off, they may start to notice it too. This will help encourage them and lessen the frustrations around dance moves they can’t quite nail.
By focusing on the areas in which your child is excelling, you can help make them more excited to keep practicing and continue to improve. When your kiddo begins to realize that they are actually improving, they will feel less frustrated with the process.
Encourage Them to Keep Practicing
As you begin to comment on your child’s improvements, they will become more excited to keep practicing. Encourage this and let them know that it will all be worth it. Each time they nail a tough dance routine or move, they will be thrilled and realize that all of their practice paid off. It can be hard to tell your child to keep practicing when they are already frustrated, but in the end, it truly is worth it.
Allow your child to take breaks as needed, don’t push them to practice constantly, but encourage them to stick with their dance class and continue to try for a little while longer. They will start to notice their own improvements and fall in love with their dance classes all over again.
